Review of The Shawshank Redemption (1994) by Alison C — 21 Feb 2015
1994. What a year for movies! This movie is art. It has life. It's so uplifting. Most people raise their eyebrows at me when I say that. Whatever. I say the movie uplifts you more and more each time Andy uplifts his fellow inmates and himself.
Hope, dang-it, HOPE!!! The movie draws some interesting parallels. Brooks parallels Red. One of them has hope. One doesn't. Same with Andy and the warden. I only recently noticed how both of them hide their secrets behind a wall decoration.
They even have parallel scenes of loading a gun. Andy chooses not to use his gun. The Warden does. The movie kind of functions like a metaphor for anyone struggling with anything and the movie's strong message of holding on to hope is timeless and powerful and resonates.
That's why its such a favorite.
