The Shape of Water is a surprisingly engrossing romantic fantasy tale, and is a visual treat. Sally Hawkins gives an impressive performance as the mute cleaner who works a highly secretive government laboratory.
The ensemble cast is top class, but Michael Shannon is simply brilliant as the antagonist - the civil servant and government agent - and makes you wonder who's really the true monster. He's the actor to watch! A work of ambitious direction, as the following themes are played out: isolation vs freedom; deception vs truth; lust vs love.
I especially enjoyed the different levels of loyalties being played out and tested. Absorbing and enjoyable.
