Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Stephanie D — 13 Mar 2018
Very beautiful film, but its message is shallow. Taking a fairy tale and just putting it enough spin to turn it into a My-Little-Ponyish film seems like a tremendous waste of potential. This could have been so much more! Aesthetically, it is flawless, It's just the message that belongs more in a corny direct-to-dvd for kids than in a production of this calibre.
I don't mean this message shouldn't be there, but we should get more layers, more complexity, more undertones, more subtext, something to make us want to re-watch The Shape Of Water. Instead we get the same thing hammered at us all throughout the film, and it subtracts a lot from the experience.
