Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Count S — 21 May 2018
Deeply derivative of the work of Jean Jeunet and Marc Caro,, especially DELICATESSEN, but lacking any of the warmth of humanity of that film. All of the characters in The Shape of Water are awful, selfish, malicious in their own ways, leaving you no one to root with or follow except, perhaps, for the villain who was probably deserving of a redemption arc.
Unfortunately that character was written and played as so cartoonishly evil that I couldn't take it seriously. Alternately disingenuously twee and graphically violent and repulsive, The Shape of Water is a hard film to enjoy on any level.
I generally enjoy Guillermo Del Toro's work, this one left me worried for him.
