The movie is a surrealistic, romantic and sometime satirical film which takes the old grade Z "creature from the black lagoon" flicks of the 50s and brings them into modern concerns (albeit in a 1962 setting) and adult themes.
A Cold War setting, a picture of early 60s racism and the struggles of loneliness are sub-themes.
