Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Michael P — 15 Jan 2018
The Shape of Water is entrancing, beautiful and deserving of all of the acclaim. Guillermo del Toro has brought a mature fairy tale to life on the big screen unlike any other. The visuals, the attention to detail, the acting and the commitment of everyone to the story is something inspiring. Without this commitment the movie wouldn't work. Its strange subject matter would come off as unbelievable. It's this passion and commitment from everyone involved that makes this movie so special.
Many romance movies are simply paintings of different colors with the same brush strokes, but The Shape of Water is something truly unique. While it does have mature content and a strange subject matter that some may find unnerving, open mindedness is the key to enjoying this movie to its fullest. Some may try and say that the movie is simply a modern adaptation of the movies/tales it pulls from, but inspirations are not the same things as templates. The Shape of Water makes its own mark, and hopefully opens new doors for Guillermo to tell more strange and beautiful stories.
