Review of The Shape of Things (2003) by Steven P — 27 Jul 2007
Ok, I admit the initial reason I wanted to see this movie was because the Smashing Pumpkins were used in the stage play for the music. "Cherub Rock" blared at the start of the play, and was enough to send Harold Pinter out of the audience (that's enough of an endorsement of a play for me :P).
That being said, this is a pretty good movie. The acting at times can be a bit 'stagey' at times but the writing is brilliant (the cast had just come off doing the play version with director, Neil Labute before filming).
It combines humor, and genuine drama, and the movie stuck with me enough that I wanted to direct the stage version of the play. The film tackles themes about the nature of art, how willing we are to change to others' whims, and the sometimes shallow nature of human interaction.
It may be bleak at times, but this is a must see movie.
