Review of The Shallows (2016) by Suresh P — 17 Jul 2016
There is a girl , there is a shark and we have a thriller. This movie was a TONNE of fun . The director was very careful in not making it a B-grade creature feature . The protagonist here likes to run away from her problems but now she is stuck with a problem from which she literally cannot run away . Now the shark becomes more than a fish, but a personification of everything she doesn't like . How she chooses to deal with it makes for a very entertaining watch . This is a self-contained little film with a constant feeling of dread and suspense. The tension was very well maintained throughout the run-time.
It has the perfect summer movie vibe . A little cheesy , a lot of hope , the human spirit , a satisfying ending . This is also a gorgeous looking movie . The cinematography reels you into the environment . The biggest surprise was the number of visual effects artists credited in the end. I couldn't tell what was real and what was not .
A shark movie other than the Jaws that actually works .
