Review of The Shallows (2016) by Unseenteeth — 22 Sep 2016
I finally saw "The Shallows" , after hearing lots of good things about it, and honestly being psyched to see a decent shark horror film at a time when they are pretty hard to come by! .... It starts off strong, giving us a plausible, (if slightly far fetched) premise that there is a beach somewhere, teeming with man eating sharks, and everybody has just assumed it's a great place to surf.
Without giving too much away, Ms. Lively has an 'encounter' with one of the sharks and winds up stranded, fighting for survival. It's all done fairly convincingly, but just as you are being sucked in .
.... it jumps the literal shark. It was like the director decided that he had to stick a Jaws tribute in there somewhere, so we have about 15 minutes at the end of the movie that are so absurd and far fetched they undo every good thing the film had done up until that point.
*sigh* ... If you're gonna be survival horror, be survival horror. If you're going to be Deep Blue Sea comedy slapstick, be that.
