Review of The Shallows (2016) by Alastair B — 04 Aug 2016
A perfectly enjoyable B-shark movie starring Blake Lively. It is efficient, solidly made, beautifully shot, and filled with some gnarly and gripping moments. There are some plot points that are unnecessary, and some of the stuff that happens in the film defies the laws of physics and logic, but I think the movie is well aware of its ridiculous nature.
Director Jaume Collet-Serra does a great job of keeping the suspense with some borderline PG-13 violence, and Blake Lively is pretty damn solid (and fucking gorgeous.) I had a lot of reservations going into it, but in the end I was pleasantly surprised.
"The Shallows" is thrilling genre fare.
