Review of The Shallows (2016) by David D — 01 Jul 2017
I found this to be a surprisingly effective flick that had me engaged from beginning to end. Some clichés abounded: Nancy gets away from it all after the death of her mother and considers dropping out of medical school because nothing could save her mother, and her faith in life is tested during a particularly bad surfing outing, and well, I don't want to spoil the ending, but let's say it hits a cliché. The needle scratched the record when Nancy tells her younger sister over the phone that she's in Tijuana; the beach and scenery look NOTHING like Tijuana. It was filmed in Queensland, Australia. Why not just set the film where it was filmed?
Anyway, these are minor quibbles about a film that does deliver on thrills and tension and is buoyed (sorry, couldn't resist) by a solid performance by Blake Lively.
