Review of The Seven Year Itch (1955) by Cameron A — 12 Oct 2009
Billy Wilder does it again. He's the master at disguising his movies to the general public as light hearted and meaningless comedies, but if you care to pay attention you will see real depth. Richard Sherman is a simple man.
He just wants to live a life devoted to his life and being healthy: or so he thought until he met the girl from upstairs. He starts to realize that he is a complicated man. Sherman wants all of those things, but at the same time he's tired of doing the same things.
We get a look inside his brain. We see exactly what he's thinking, why he's going crazy, and what he wants to happen. He even speaks what's on his mind when no one's around! But it's later that Sherman realizes that he's not being bad because it's what he likes, but he's doing it because he's scared that his wife no longer loves him, and where would he go and what would he do without his family? He is seven years into his marriage and this is the only thing he has going for him in his life.
Well acted by both Monroe and Ewell, this movie will make you laugh at all the ridiculous things he does, and the ditsy girl, but if you pay close attention you will see a heart beating. I give this one a 4/5.
