Review of The Seven Year Itch (1955) by Jonathan D — 28 Jun 2012
Oof. This "classic" did *not* age well. It's based on a play - and it feels like it, as 90% takes place in an apartment. Worse, 80% of it is a monologue - Tom Ewell as Richard Sherman blabbering to himself about his fantasies and his inner turmoil. And the final insult is that the iconic shot of Monroe standing over the subway grate never really appears in the movie. We see her, then we see her legs as her skirt fluffs up - but never a satisfying full shot of her.
Ewell natters on, but he's more irritating than funny. Things definitely liven up when Marilyn is on screen. She's that dumb blonde, but genuinely endearing. We don't laugh at her; we enjoy her candor and the irony of this universally desired woman naively relating to Richard as though nothing is happening between them.
