Review of The Sessions (2012) by Bob S — 28 Jul 2013
A one-of-a-kind film telling the true story of Mark O'Brien - a man with a condition brought on from polio that has deterred him from having sex and limited his opportunity to meet a sexual partner.
The solution: A psychiatrist appointed therapist, played by Hunt, that enables Mark to become more confident and comfortable in the bedroom. The amount of nudity and sexual detail made me admittedly uncomfortable, but I believe that was the point.
The director was attempting for you to sense the same discomfort and awkwardness as Mark felt. Hawkes was superb as Mark, and along with Hunt, shared some of the year's best performances. At the very least, this film is a lightning rod that will garner good discussion about sexual boundaries.
