Review of The Servant (1963) by Mikael K — 13 Dec 2009
Harold Pinter's ingenious adaptation of Robin Maugham's novel. The story of an oddly twisted relationship between a young wealthy man and his servant lives through Joseph Losey's innovative direction. Starting as a restrained yet clever drama this tale turns into a psychedelic nightmare with layers of depth and possibilities for interpretation.
In a way the film is a bit difficult to approach; the characters feel distanced from the viewer and the scenes have a somehow off-beat feel, but this is all clearly intentional as they make the effect of the last, dissociated scenes even more powerful. Here's a flick you really want to revisit after seeing it for the first time.
