Review of The Servant (1963) by Art S — 07 Apr 2011
Working from a script by Pinter, Joseph Losey directs valet Dirk Bogarde to tighten the thumbscrews on spoiled rich boy James Fox. This is class warfare, turning the tables, and to the victor goes the spoils.
No mercy. The oblique jazz score and camerawork that starts in one place and drifts to the real focus add to the tension (and what about that faucet dripping scene? Real tension from Sarah Miles). When the tone changed, I was a bit stunned but perhaps this is the only ending that makes sense.
