Review of The Serpent's Egg (1977) by Chris W — 29 Feb 2008
Honestly, I don't really know what I was watching. The Serpent's Egg is a completely different Bergman experience. I knew it would be, but I was hoping for something a little better. Instead of focusing on characters, it seems as if plot is the focus here (in a strangely unconventional way).
David Carradine was not very good in this movie. I really just didn't feel convinced by his character. Of course, the mess of a story and script didn't help his cause. This movie is saved by a once again great cinematography effort from Sven Nykvist, a good performance by Liv Ullmann, and a bizarre conclusion that I really did enjoy.
Still, the whole product is one of Bergman's worst.
