Review of The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988) by Heist ! — 10 Jun 2007
The Serpent and the Rainbow sort of sucks. Voodoo is rarely a good basis for a horror movie. That being said, boobies.
The Hills Have Eyes would benefit from a remake with a better budget for the makeup/costume department. Oh wait, it probably did. I haven't seen the remake, but the plot adjustments and the few pics I've seen seem to show that the remake actually improve on the original, which was decent but severly lacking in the two areas I mentionned. Inbreds just aren't that scary.
Last House on the Left was one freaky movie. To think that Wes Craven would go from this and Hills to the Scream sequels schlock (and let's not forget that werewolf movie.. wait, no, let's). Anyway, I went in knowing nothing about the movie except the title and having seen the cover. Let's just say that it was different and frankly, I don't understand why a guy like Eli Roth would have to catch so much heat while stuff like this, which is, in my mind, a lot more disturbing that Roth's stuff, was done more than 20 years ago.
Knocked Up was great, but not as much as I hoped. First, Katherine Heigl never removes her bra. Honestly, it's just awkward to see them have sex with her bra on. Honestly! Anyway, Knocked Up lacks exposition on the supporting cast, which is also not as good as in Virgin. Paul Rudd is still excellent, but the stoners (with the exception of the asian girl, she rocked) aren't on par with what I was expecting. Plus, there's a lot of mush. But anyway, there's still plenty of excellence in there. Maybe further viewing will improve.
Kill, Baby, Kill starts up looking like it will still disappoint (I say still because so far that's how I received Bava's work) but once it picks up, it becomes creepy and surreal enough to match the set design/cinematography (for the second time, Danger: Diabolik being the other example).
