Review of The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988) by Laura K — 25 Aug 2007
I remember this film scaring the shit out of me when I was about 8. Watching it now at 26 makes it much less appealing. The creepy imagery gave it the feel of an H.P. Lovecraft story, but it ends up being silly at the end.
Some of the effects are also a little dated; I think when Lucien pulls his head off and throws it at Pullman, his arms are white although he is black. Although this over-the-topness made sense in the 1980s, now it just seems kind of silly.
It could have stayed grounded in reality while still retaining a lot of voodoo elements, most likely attributed to Pullman's drinking of a bunch of weird shit that he shouldn't be ingesting. By the way, why is this zombie powder an anesthetic when one can still feel under its effect?
