Review of The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988) by Ashley G — 01 Sep 2009
This has become one of my favorite horror films ever. Certainly paints a bad picture for voodoo, but when does Hollywood ever make anything so little known look good? Despite the hate for a fascinating religion and culture, the movie itself as a horror film is stellar.
Intense, graphic scenes, an intriguing plot, all well acted and the special effects are pulled off well (if maybe a little unconvincingly, but I'm a gorehound so I'm not going to complain!). I have yet to read the book that inspired this movie ("The Serpent and the Rainbow" by Wade Davis) but I'm definitely going to treat them as two separate entities.
