Review of The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising (2007) by Paul N — 13 Aug 2009
I was pleasantly supprised by this film, it's like 'Harry Potter' meets 'Lord Of the Rings' for those that don't fancy either. A 14 year old boy discovers that he has special powers, and is part of a sect that has to protect the universe from evil, he has super hero esque powers, rather than the gay wand that harry potter has, and he also travels in time every time he finds a part of the 6 mystic runes, that he needs to collect in order to win the day.
Visually stunning, and easily on par with much bigger budged movies. Apart from the very begining of the film, there isn't much of a presence of danger or suspence, the film is predictable but enjoyable.
Christopher Ecclestone plays the role of the main bad guy, and it's not his fault that he doesn't come accross menacing enough, it's more down to jumpy editing, and at times ropey dialogue, I know this because he plays scary brilliantly in 'Shallow Grave.
The film feels like it has been "over edited" to squash it into 1hr30, and tends to jump from scene to scene, instead of flowing. You never take any of the characters to heart, or care what happens to them, and this is the problem.
Could have been much better, but still more bearable than any of the 'Potter' movies.
