Review of The Secret of Roan Inish (1994) by Joy D — 11 May 2008
Watched this on VHS a few days ago. A very slow story about legends and spirits. I suppose it's a story of never losing hope and the power of love. I saw it as an interesting fairytale about what happens when you interfere with supernatural things - a guy captures a silkie.
..takes the "woman" home to be his wife...she returns to the sea eventually...and then many generations later, an infant son is taken by the sea and eventually returned. Message: you mess with nature and take something from her, she will take something from you in return.
This movie had me wondering why fairytales and legends came to be - was it for pure entertainment? was it the explanations of the ignorant for things that they could not understand? The practical, logical, and scientific side of me always seeks a way to trump legends.
