I'd forgotten how beautiful and scary it was. I'd also forgotten Justin uttered the first "curse word" I'd ever heard, and laughed that of ALL the themes - parent/spouse death, scientific testing, murder, caste society - that one curse word is what gets the "tsk-tsk, It's a kids movie" fingers wagging.
I think part of the appeal is a small creature dealing with real big issues.
