Review of The Secret of NIMH (1982) by Hunter D — 22 Oct 2009

Don Bluth's directorial debut knocked anything Disney was doing at the time flat on it's ass, forcing them to get their shit together in order to compete with independents like Bluth that were making better and more interesting films.

SECRET OF NIMH sort of has a WATERSHIP DOWN feel to it in that it depicts a world of small animals and the constant state of danger they live in. It's also fascinating how it depicts their world as something fantastical and complex that exists right under our noses.

This was one of my absolute favorite films as a kid, and for the most part it holds up, my only reservation being with the final scene of the film, as it wraps the movie up far too quickly, it could've used an additional eight minutes to give all of the characters their due.

Still, it's a great family film, and one I hope to show to my kids some day (if I'm crazy enough to have any).
