Review of The Secret of NIMH (1982) by Geoff G — 28 Jul 2012
"Johnathan Brisby was killed today while helping with the plan.
It is four years since our departure from NIMH, and our world is changing. We cannot stay.
Here much longer. Johnathan was a dear friend. I am lost in knowing how to help his widow.
She knows nothing about us or the plan. Perhaps best that I do nothing at present.
I shall miss him. Johnathan - wherever you are - your thoughts must comfort her tonight.
She will be waiting and you will not return. Farewell... my friend.".
--- Nicodemus (Derek Jacobi).
There is still something special about a Don Bluth production since it can surpass any McDisney sequel in story and production quality twice over and much better than a lot of live-action films. This one was no different. The story is almost Shakespearean, it starts innocently enough but is shrouded in mystery, has a little bit of whimsy, full of intrigue, wonderful action sequences and a satisfying conclusion. The characters are well-rounded, they are a hint flawed in the beginning but like any heroic figure, eventually find their inner courage by the end, just in time to save the day. Of course, there is also the moral lesson but presented to the audience so subtly that the lesson has managed to seep to your psyche even before you get the chance to protest. This was just plain awesome and charming, classically told, beautifully animated and good, clean fun for the whole family. A truly timeless classic!!!!
