Review of The Secret of Kells (2009) by Joe B — 21 Sep 2010
It's very easy to see why this was included as a Best Animated Feature film nominee this year. The animation is gorgeous, richly detailed and endlessly interesting. I'd bet you could look at multiple frames in a single shot and see something new in each one.
It's too bad that the story that accompanies said animation isn't very interesting. On the Botten Watch Check...this one got me checking about 15 minutes into the 75 minute running time. It also doesn't help that the accents are so thick at times you need subtitles to follow along. I'd think that the film would be better enjoyed with no sound at all.
Aside from some slightly racially offensive character animation, there's a lot of beauty here and it is worth a viewing...just don't be surprised if you start a-yawnin'.
