Review of The Secret of Kells (2009) by Robert B — 25 Apr 2012
It really really kills me to not love this. The film is so beautiful, but the characters are so underdeveloped and boring. Even Aisling, who steals the show (along with the cat) just by actually being marginally interesting, is marred by a pretty weak performance from her voice actress.
The sound effects and music are noticeably awesome too, but the plot is also (despite some epic elements) very weak. The stakes hinge on something that just doesn't feel very important to the viewer, a supposedly awesome book (show don't tell!!!).
In short, it suffers from Avatar syndrome: I like everything about it but the screenplay, and that's what's supposed to hold it all together.
