Review of The Secret Life of Words (2005) by Margaret W — 03 Apr 2012
Yes, another love story, but not the least bit formulaic, and it celebrates survirors. It is very slow, but extremely powerful, and demonstrates how two wounded people can heal one another, even as they have closed out everyone and everything else in their worlds.
Josef (Tim Robbins) is temporarily blinded in an oil-rig accident, and falls in love with Hanna (Sarah Polley), his extremely shy nurse, and the beautiful woman she is on the inside. One of the lovliest and exultant endings in a film, well worth a patient person's time and attention.
