Review of The Secret Life of Pets (2016) by R. K — 05 Sep 2016
If Universal took more time into making a decent animation they could compete with the likes of DreamWorks and Disney/Pixar, but here they fall a bit flat. Who doesn't love animals? They could've hit the jackpot with a heartwarming film about our love for our pets.
What hurts the film is that although the animals are goofy and over the top caricatures of themselves they dont really develop into fully rounded characters, not like in films like Monsters Inc, A Bugs Life or even Toy Story.
It also doesn't help we know literally nothing about the owner, other then shes a dog lover. Saying that it does start of really strong with the animals acting like they would normally, you have the snobby cats, the over excited and worried dogs, but it quickly becomes tiresome and the jokes either don't land or are nowhere to be seen.
.. shame as I really wanted to like this!
