Review of The Secret Life of Bees (2008) by Brandon G — 16 Nov 2010
Such a great film, based on an even better book. Perhaps a tad too honey-coated ( see what I did there) in some situations, but all in all absolutely beautiful. I loved way it dealt with difficult concepts such as death, loss, etc, with a fresh, poetic viewpoint.
Not to speak ill of Will Smith, but I was immensely impressed that him and his wife produced it. Still, the actors chosen to portray the characters did a stupendous job, particularly Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Hudson and Queen Latifah, bringing the Boatright sisters into full, warm light.
