Review of The Secret Life of Bees (2008) by Jana S — 21 Jan 2010
Kiddâ??s dramatic novel is adapted for the big screen with Fanning (who is all of a sudden a teenager) in the starring role of Lily. A superb ensemble cast strengthens the film; however, the message within the story is the star of the show.
Lily and her nanny, Rosaleen (played by Hudson), fight through abuse, search for their identities, and desire independence in a world void of tolerance and liberty for girls like Lily and Rosaleen. In parallel, they journey together but their quests take them on separate paths of discovery.
Even though dramas like this tend to drag, there are only a few moments where you will notice.
