Review of The Secret Life of Bees (2008) by Se7Enth A — 10 Sep 2010
This is one the most fulfilling and uplifting films that I have ever seen. I was in a mood for a quintessential "good cry," A tale about learning to forgive and personal exploration. Beautiful plot line, compelling performances from an amazing array of versatile actresses.
The film's 1964 Civil Rights South Carolina era texture serves as a backdrop. Writer/director Gina Prince-Bythewood's adaptation of the book by Georgian novelist Sue Monk Kidd touches on the rural South's social complexities, including the dynamic gulf between middle-class African-Americans and poor, uneducated ones.
Imagine the vast racial divide during those times, separate movie theatre entrances for the colored. I learned: Judge a man not by the color of his skin by but the content of his character.
