Review of The Searchers (1956) by Mark — 14 Sep 2008
This is with out a doubt my favorite John Wayne, and Western for that matter. My only gripe with the movie was the location it was filmed at. The movie was filmed at Monument Valley, which was John Fords favorite Western backdrop.
It just looks nothing like the plains/grasslands of Texas, where the story takes place. The story was great the acting was good, but the characters that were developed by each of the respective actors draw the viewer in to the story and make a connection that is captured by only a few in the genre.
You can find influence from this film on many works made since, and probably the years to come. The character of Ethan Edwards, played by John Wayne was arguably Wayne finest role. Keep an open mind while watching this movie, and don't try to measure these characters against modern Values or Political Correctness.
No such notions existed in the Western Frontier. It was a fight for survival. All this aside Please give this movie a try. You have to pay attention to details there is much that is inferred and not spoken witch gives a greater insight into the story and characters etc.
..You may have to watch it again before it makes sense. If you like westerns don't miss this one.
