An iconic figure framed in the doorway midway between the civility and protection indoors and the cruelty and harshness of frontier life outdoors, Ethan (Wayne) is a fiercely determined but flawed hero, obsessively bent on vengeance.
Later, the backlit mouth of a cave again frames the hero as his desire for revenge is replaced by redemption.
