Review of The Searchers (1956) by Paul P — 03 May 2009
The performance are incredibly dated. It's a full on drama with slapstick humor placed throughout, that didn't work for me. The ideas of racism are ridiculously soft. The "Indians" are played by white people with a Robert Evans style tan job.
And the only time you see the Indians they're acting like murdering savages. But the cinematography is outstanding, every shot is perfectly framed set against Monument Valley. John Wayne is fantastic, his presence on screen is outstanding, he just sells the character so well.
And the story kept my interest the whole way.
