Review of The Searchers (1956) by Brad W — 13 Jan 2010
There are roughly a million westerns on my long list of movies to see, which is worrisome, because as a rule, I generally don't care for westerns. Apparently I've started with the best however, because this was really good.
The most fascinating thing going into this movie is looking for reasons why it has become so influential; Steven Spielberg once called it the best movie ever made. I can definitely see its influence with regards to filming the hero's journey, and there are some beautiful scenic shots, but I'd love to watch this movie again with one of the greats and have them talk me through what they see in it.
Aside from all of that, it's a great movie with some good acting from Wayne and Jeffrey Hunter. Definitely worth a look, even if (particularly if?) you're not a fan of the genre.
