Review of The Searchers (1956) by Robert C — 07 Apr 2010
One of the most influential films to all the great modern filmmakers. Although I hold a deep place in my heart for "Once Upon a Time in the West", it could be heavily debated between the two as to which is the better western.
I don't think that argument serves a purpose since both attempt different methods of approach. In the traditional sense, "The Searchers" is the greatest western, with one of the best opening and closing shots to ever grace the screen.
If you have the opportunity to see it restored on Blu-ray, do whatever you can. It feels almost like a theatrical experience.
