Review of The Searchers (1956) by Woo-Ok J — 13 Jul 2010

This movie made me think about racism and friendship of family.

The Searchers was released in 1956 in USA. This movie is typical western movie because this movie has lots of features - background is western, protagonist fights with bad guys, it has exciting action sceens etc. Ethan Edwards who is protagonist in this movie comes back to his older brother's house after the end of Civil War. After a while his brother's family is killed by Indians except his nieces named Debbie Edwards and Lucy Edwards. These girls are abducted by Indians. So Ethan and his nephew named Martin Pawley - he is half brother of these girls and he has Indians' blood -- look for these girls during 5 years. Finally, they find Debbie but Debbie already lives like and with Indians. But Ethan has racism that all Indians are not human but beast. So, Ethan does..................

Now, I want to talk about some good things and bad things in this movie - these are just in my opinion. Firstly, good things : reflect features of western movie very well especially the background of this movie is wonderful, show the problems and solutions of racism -- Ethan wants to kill his niece at first and hates Martin Pawely, show the affection of family and moved. Next, bad things : In my case, it's too hard to identify who is he (or she) because their clothes or hair styles are very similar, flow of this movie is too slow -- especially in these two events that find Debbie and love between Martin and Laurie. Anyway, I think the story of this movie is simple, exciting and easy to understand.

Lastly, my favorite scene in this movie is this. Ethan and his party are going on horseback with a huge rocky mountain and Indians follow them. In this scene, we can feel how nature is magnificent and we can feel thrill. So I recommend that you look carefully at this scene and I want that you also can feel what I felt.
