Review of The Searchers (1956) by Alison C — 28 Aug 2010
I don't much care for most westerns. But I thought this one deserved getting checked out. and after watching it, I have a lot of respect for it and what it did for movies to come. I could see some films like Lawrence of Arabia and Star Wars Episode IV took some things from this. Mainly in cinematography. Because it was top notch. amazing shots of landscape and the ones through doorways. so good. But it had some of those classic western elements that I don't enjoy. like really stiff, forced dialogue and less than par acting. and some cheeseballness. ug. I hate that. Interesting story. loaded with racist themes. I mean, the characters (besides Martin) all seemed to agree that it was better to shoot Debbie than let her live with the Native Americans. sheesh. This film would make quite a ruckus if it was released today. I didn't pick up on this, but I guess the visuals suggest that Ethan was in love with Martha (his bro's wife) and that was a huge motivator for him in his search.
I thought this was way too long. they go out three times and look for her over several years. I would have liked to see what was going on with Debbie. but, maybe after we saw her with the chief because that was a good shock. I know it wouldn't have been a happy ending, but usually the captives acclimated and when and if they were rescued it was against their will.
So, I'm in love with the cinematography but not a whole lot else. interesting story but I'm not totally buying it. groaner dialogue that makes me feel like I'm watching a musical. but all the same, I respect this movie.
