A gritty and dark look at the joys, sorrows, hopes, and fears of white settlers in the era of U.S. western expansion. Suprisingly, it manages to not be completely unsympathetic to Native Americans. Not suprisingly, it's a bit of a fantasy--a revenge fantasy.
Throughout, the picture is fraught with tension. I love this movie.
