Review of The Searchers (1956) by Brian C — 16 Oct 2010
Excellent visual story-telling, and it had some very emotional scenes. But, the ending felt a little forced.
UPDATE (Oct 2010): I had to write two papers on this film this semester, so I watched it two or three times. Seeing it on Blu-ray gave me a whole new appreciation for how well everything is staged. And wow, this is one of the visually stunning films I've ever seen. John Wayne's performance is amazing, and I just love the character. So complex, tortured, and interesting. But...I still feel like the ending is a cheat. By the time we reach the climax, I am so invested in the characters and how their conflicting intentions are going to be resolved...and then the way they are resolved seems forced. The payoff seems like a letdown. Is there something subtle going on that I missed? Wouldn't be the first time.
Oh, and come on, people...this film is not racist. It simply explores the complex issue of racism without flinching. Its ambiguity is what makes it so interesting.
I stand by the rating I gave this film last semester: 4/5.
