Review of The Searchers (1956) by Steve H — 05 May 2012
I'm going to say right now, I'm not a big fan of Western films, but I can recognize a great film when I see one. It is your basic John Wayne movie, but it's also different. People see Wayne as always being the "good guy.
" There are points in this movie when you may get the idea that he's not exactly a good guy. He's kind of a tweener here, which means he's good but at the same time he's bad. John Wayne himself is a great actor, and probably the best actor of that time.
The ending saw Wayne letting his niece live, but in the original script, he killed her. The ending was changed because the studio didn't want audiences to see their hero kill an innocent girl. So overall, Wayne is more of the bad guy in this.
Overall, this is a pretty good movie. Everyone showcased their talents very well. I recommend this to anyone, though barely anyone will see it because people today don't really like Westerns.
