Review of The Searchers (1956) by Amanda B — 15 Mar 2015
To get the negative out of the way: the dialogue and acting in this movie are horrendous. The next time you watch The Searchers count how many times Wayne says, "That'll be the day." In fact, you could probably turn it into a drinking game.
I get the supposed complexity of Wayne's character, but in reality this story fails to convince as a man's battle with racism and makes much more sense as a story of simple greed. My personal preferences for plot and characters aside, this film is a breathtaking masterpiece that shows why John Ford is the cornerstone of the Western genre.
