Beautifully shot, regretfully overdrawn. It shouldn't be missed by anyone who appreciates the origins of modern America, or early films. Wayne respects the film enough to actually act in this one, which is a pleasant surprise and contrast to some of the laboring scenes and dry line reading found in his later films.

The subject manner in this film is excellence, the acting memorable, overall the film feels like Ford's personal take on Gone with the Wind, with John Wayne at the lead reins.
