Review of The Searchers (1956) by Jens N — 21 Mar 2013
Beautiful iconography, and a powerhouse and daring performance by John Wayne, I can see why this film is considered great. Inconsistencies in the Jeffery Hunter character(who is likable but directed into a performance that is rather grating), plot meandering and failed attempts at humor weigh the picture down as time has passed.
However there are so many underlying themes and ideas in this film that it elevates past the status of an ordinary western and becomes something for the ages. This is one of Wayne's great performances and a truly enjoyable and entertaining film.
