Review of The Sea Chase (1955) by Jeff Z — 22 Jan 2010
Slow moving but interesting movie about a German freighter trying to make it back to the Fatherland from the South Pacific during the opening of World War II. John Wayne plays the anti-Nazi German captain of the ship but fortunately does not try in the slightest for a German accent or to act German.
In fact neither does anybody else except fot John Qualen who already had a Swiss/German/Norwegian type accent to begin with. Here he gets his best role in his many John Wayne films as the ship's engineer.
There's a bunch of other familiar faces in here too: Paul Fix, James Arness, Claude Akins, Peter Whiteny, Alan Hale Jr., Tab Hunter and of course the breathtakingly beuatiful Lana Turner. Based on a terrific novel that features a much different ending!
