Review of The Scarlet Letter (1995) by Richard C — 14 Oct 2006
For those of you who haven't read the novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne, this might be a stirring drama. To those of us who have, it's an unintentional comedy. The movie throws out all the symbolism of the book (and I don't mean a random red bird.
I don't know what that was about.), and seems to be made so that a toddler could discover the character quirks through some ridiculously clunky dialogue. ("She is an elf-child." "I am stronger now.
") But if you want to see pointless nudity with Gary Oldman, Demi Moore, or... Robert Duvall... this is sure the movie for you. Hawthorne's story stops being a tale of morality and sin and turns into a fairy tale romance.
Crazy.
