Review of The Scarlet Letter (1995) by Robert W — 07 Nov 2008
I just finished reading the book for English class, so I was very surprised when this movie was absolutely nothing like the book. I should have known that it wouldn't be since it said "Freely based on the book by Nathaniel Hawthorne" in the opening credits.
It may not have been as accurate as I would have liked, but it was nonetheless exciting and dramatic. Demi Moore and Gary Oldman have such wonderful and believable chemistry, it was a joy watching their two characters fall for each other.
On the other hand, you just have to hate Robert Duvaf! The name Chillingworth describes his character perfectly, and was actually portrayed as much meaner than I would have imagined. Great movie, but if you're looking for something that actually resembles the book, try another version!
