Review of The Scarlet Empress (1934) by Private U — 07 Oct 2007
Louise Dresser as the corn-husker tsaritsa of Russia is the film's greatest anachronistic offense. As for the main entrée Dietrich, my tongue starts to float after Dietrich gives Peter(Pan)'s trick the once-over.
Critics and viewers rightfully praise Dietrich's review of the troops, but take note when she evaluates Peter's mistress. Hand paused under her chin, lips stretched in a smirk, gaze fixed incredulously on a tramp foolish enough to threaten usurping her, Dietrich lets the girl know her place without uttering a word.
