Review of The Scarlet Empress (1934) by Bill T — 12 Dec 2008
It is as much a love letter to textiles as it is to dietrich's flawless face. every frame screams wood! silk! feathers! fur! stone! lace! the grotesque statues throughout are over the top, but the outrageous production design is offset by dietrich's performance, which reminded me somewhat of barbara stanwyck in 'baby face.
' here we see another girl who grows into a woman by learning to wield the power of her sexuality relentlessly. every frame is crowded with extras, props, statues, all existing merely as a hugely elaborate frame for dietrich's face.
